NEWS : April 2nd

I would like to express my general disappointment with some of the people I watch. Artists who shall remain unnamed, who have amazing skill and potential, but who have a tendency of drawing the same thing for every picture, using the same elements, the same poses, not really showing any desire to improve their work. Formulaic, boring, repetitive "art" defines what these people have done in the year or so that I've been watching them.

I've unwatched 2 people today. I wouldn't be sorry if I never saw another work by them again. And that's really sad. I love seeing new art. It inspires me like nothing else.

Neither of these two people watch me, so I doubt they will read this entry... this entry is really for those of you who DO watch me... two questions:

1. Does my work ever strike you as repetitive? (dear god, I hope not)

2. Have you had similar experience to mine, where you're just so underwhelmed with what lackluster stuff some artists have been producing despite their amazing skill and potential?

~~~
I've started posting WIPs and sketches in my LiveJournal.
The link is this: [link]
It's not friends-only, it's not discriminative, it doesn't promise anything. It's just a blog for finished art, with some sketches in between.
My current painting I don't have any scans of because the work is too light to show up on a scanner properly. When I've made enough progress to pass the scanner receptivity threshold, I'll post a wip in my lj.
OMG OMG OMG OMG
February 18th, 2008
Big set of features this time, but then again, I haven't featured anything since November.
~~~

Some people have asked me... so I will explain.

These features are the "favoritest" of my favorites. These are works that, in skill, detail, color, composition or imagination, are examples for me to strive for. I limit my featured favorites to paintings and drawings, because those are the two artforms I find most inspiring.

Some of these artists are already very popular. They deserve it. Get over it.

Some of these artists are completely unknown. Fave their work, help them be known. They deserve it.

Features listed in the reverse order they were faved.

NEWS : February 1st

Well, January has come and passed, and my life will never be the same. I got a new apartment, a new computer, and my days are filled with fun activities such as shopping for new-apartment necessities and figuring out where the nearest grocery store is.

I have not done any art.

By the evenings when I get home from work, my apartment is too dark to paint in. My lamp will arrive on Thursday.

In the meantime, I've been practicing calligraphy, coding up a redesign of my website, and planning new pieces to paint once I get enough brightness in my apartment. Oh, and unpacking.

Expect to see some new stuff once I get back into action in the next week or so.

Oh, almost forgot! My little piece of happiness as I logged on today: "Pink Flamingo" is at 100 faves!

And "Queen of the Arctic Wolves" is almost at 200!

Wow, thank you so much, everybody!

So I went to the Threadless retail store opening party on Friday night... had drinks with the Threadless guys... woke up at a friend's house completely hung over... and didn't start this weekend's painting until Saturday night. In the end, it's Monday, and it's not even half done, and my flowers will wilt by the time I sit down at the painting again. Good thing I'm almost done with the flowers part of it! Gah. So, in the end, Threadless ate my painting...

I thought that I should take a moment and enlighten you (in case you care) on my art selling philosophy. And it is... *drumroll*

I do not draw to sell. I sell to draw.

There are a few reasons for this. Most of them in some way tie to conservation of resources. A variant on Newton's Laws if you will, though they're more guidelines than laws. I present them below.

Rule #1. Conservation of paper.
I do not have any room to store my art. And unused paper stores a helluva lot easier than paintings and drawings. Thus, I have to (roughly) get rid of, in whatever way I see fit, of about as much volume of art as I create. This is why I would ideally like to move ALL of my inventory.

Rule #2. Conservation of money.
Art is a hobby, not a profession for me. Therefore, my art must procure enough funds for me to purchase additional supplies. Preferably, the art that is sold should be created with the supplies that are purchased with the money.

Rule #3. Conservation of effort.
I do not believe that I should give someone my art without getting something in return. That something does not have to be money. It can be any form of effort on the part of the receiver that makes me, the artist, understand that my art is appreciated. Sadly, most people can only express their appreciation with money. Someone who receives my art for free simply does not appreciate it. If you ever wanted free art from me, and I refused it, know that this is why I don't give my art away.

This is it. These are my rules. This is why I sell my art. This is also why you'll rarely find me making more than 1-2 prints of any piece (that, and I don't own a printer ^_~ ).

If you'd like to help me clear some shelf space, please look around my webpage for artwork that is available for sale. I give away a free sketch with every purchase. And if you're interested in anything here on DA or on my personal gallery that doesn't have a price tag (and you do not see the word "SOLD" next to it) contact me with an offer. If I have it, I am more than happy to sell it for a fair price.

FABULOUS Prints on Canvas Paper

These things have excellent color, they're 8.5 x 11 inches with a tiny white margin (but would fit very well in a mat with an 8 by 10 inch opening), and the canvas texture adds such a lovely touch to the prints, they really do look fabulous!

And the best part is, they're $10 just like my regular prints! I only have a couple such prints of each image, so get yours while they're here!

These are entirely on a first-come-first-serve basis.
I will keep the list as up-to-date as possible.
Shipping is $5 within US.
Note me to order.

NEWS : June 25th

You know... after ten years of drawing, I was starting to wonder if my stuff is too boring or unpretty or uninteresting to qualify for art theft... but today I have my first ever art theft. Wow.

[link]

I'm actually not upset at all. I didn't think I would be... and I'm not. I just want it taken down. I reported them. The person who pointed me to the thief also reported them. Please don't spam the nice admins.

~~~
In other news, I am closing my commissions. I will finish the commissions I already owe (sorry for the delays, you wonderful people!) and that will be all. I work fulltime, and I only have an hour or so of free time every day, which I would much rather spend on painting for myself and improving my technique.
This not to mean that I will stop drawing and painting! Not in the slightest. And I will still participate in Private Exchange. But I need to catch up on all my painting ideas before I start offering my services for sale again.
What it does mean is that the only way to own my art from now on (and until I start doing commissions again) is to buy an existing original or print. Which is easy enough, since almost all my originals are for sale.
Why do I sell my art? Because I believe in spreading it around the world, to people who will take pleasure in looking at it. And because I do not believe in stacking art in a box on a shelf, hidden away in the dark, for no eyes to ever see.
Ideally, I would like to move my entire inventory before I move next summer. To that end, if you're interested in anything here on DA or on my personal gallery, and you do not see the word "SOLD" next to it, contact me with an offer. If I have it, I am more than happy to sell it for a fair price.
So... go check out my gallery and happy summer!
NEWS : May 20th
So, you probably noticed that I haven't been around for the past month. I have. But I've hardly ever logged onto DA as myself, and, despite the fact that I have been drawing, I don't have any new art to show quite yet.
Why?
Because I have a fulltime job now. I stopped doing all of my various hobbies when I started my job, and I'm slowly adding them back in at a rate that doesn't overwhelm me. Last week, I picked up drawing again. I'm loving my new piece, but it's very detailed and will take me a while.
I've also gone back to Habitat for Humanity for the first time in a long time this weekend and got to visit my mom in NY for Mother's Day weekend -- two things I've been putting off and off.
Thank you very much to everybody who's noticed that I've been quiet recently, especially Kathryn (~pocketseizure), Sarah (*purplegoldfish) and Lara (=Nephro). And to Daron (~Briar44) of course, for being so patient with the print I still need to send her. You guys are wonderful! ^__^
I also somehow managed to reach the benchmark of 500 watchers while I was gone! Wow. Thank you to everybody who watches me! You make me so happy! ^__^
